Chicago and the surrounding area are reeling from a severe weather system that brought numerous tornadoes, leaving behind a trail of destruction. At least 11 tornado touchdowns have been confirmed by the National Weather Service, including one at O'Hare International Airport.
Residents awoke on Tuesday morning to scenes of devastation, with homes damaged, trees uprooted, and power lines downed. Storm damage has been reported in various neighborhoods, including Hodgkins and Indian Head. Transportation services have been disrupted, and power outages persist in some areas.
One of the most significant tornadoes touched down near O'Hare Airport shortly before 10 pm on Monday. Drone footage captured by NBC Chicago shows the tornado's destructive path, revealing extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure.
The Weather Service has also confirmed a tornado touchdown near Sugar Grove, Illinois, approximately 40 miles west of Chicago. Seven tornadoes have been observed in the Chicagoland area overall.
Crews and residents are working tirelessly to clean up the debris and restore normalcy to the affected areas. Emergency services are responding to reports of injuries, and local officials are urging residents to exercise caution and stay informed as recovery efforts continue.
