Argentina and Uruguay Lead the Way with 15 Copa America Titles Each

A Look at the Most Successful Teams in the Tournament's History

Argentina and Uruguay stand head and shoulders above the rest as the most successful teams in the Copa America, having won the prestigious tournament 15 times each. These two South American powerhouses have dominated the competition since its inception in 1916, amassing an impressive collection of trophies.

Historical Success of Argentina and Uruguay

Argentina's first Copa America triumph came in 1921, and they have since added 13 more titles to their tally, most recently in 2021. Some of their most notable victories include the 1925 tournament where they defeated Brazil 3-1, and the 1947 tournament where they won all 6 of their matches. Uruguay, on the other hand, won their first Copa America in 1916 and have since won 15 titles, including a record four consecutive wins from 1923 to 1926. Their most recent triumph came in 2011, when they defeated Paraguay 3-0 in the final.

Other Copa America Champions

While Argentina and Uruguay have dominated the Copa America, several other countries have also claimed the title. Paraguay has won the tournament twice, in 1953 and 1979. Peru has won the tournament twice, in 1939 and 1975. Brazil, despite being one of the most successful footballing nations in the world, has only won the Copa America nine times, with their most recent win coming in 2019.
