FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DE MONACO 2021 - RACE RESULT
Max Verstappen wins first Monaco Grand Prix
Victory from pole position gives Verstappen the lead of the 2021 F1 World Championship
Max Verstappen claimed his first-ever Monaco Grand Prix victory in dominant fashion on Sunday, leading every lap from pole position to take the lead of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship. The Red Bull driver controlled the race from the start, withstanding pressure from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in the early stages before gradually building a comfortable lead. Leclerc finished second, ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris in third.
Verstappen's victory was his third of the season, moving him eight points clear of Lewis Hamilton in the drivers' standings. Hamilton finished seventh in Monaco, after a difficult weekend for the Mercedes driver. The seven-time world champion struggled for pace throughout the weekend and was unable to challenge for the podium.
Verstappen's win was a major boost for Red Bull in the constructors' championship. The team now leads Mercedes by 26 points, with just six races remaining in the season.
The Monaco Grand Prix was a thrilling race from start to finish, with plenty of overtaking and drama. Verstappen's victory was a deserved reward for a dominant performance, and it gives him a significant advantage in the championship race.
Note
Hamilton scored an additional point for setting the fastest lap of the race. It was the fifth round of the 2021 Formula One World Championship the 78th time that the Monaco Grand Prix was held and the first time it had been held since.
